Singapore is taking a proactive approach to managing the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on jobs and livelihoods. The government emphasised that Singaporeans will not be “passive passengers” in the AI era. Instead, the country aims to ensure that AI adoption creates better jobs, improves productivity, and delivers inclusive growth through collaboration between the government, employers, and unions.
While current data shows no widespread job displacement from AI, the Ministry of Manpower acknowledged that AI’s impact could grow as adoption accelerates. A recent MOM survey found that:
- 6.2% of firms reduced headcount due to AI adoption
- 8.5% reduced hiring activity because of AI
To prepare workers and businesses for the transition, Singapore is rolling out several initiatives:
- Expansion of AI and digital skills training through SkillsFuture programmes
- Free access to premium AI tools for selected training participants
- New “AI readiness” assessment tools for workers
- Stronger support for business transformation and job redesign
- Greater focus on flexible work arrangements and emerging job opportunities
The government also announced support measures for businesses, including the S$400 million Enterprise Workforce Transformation Package, which helps companies redesign jobs and train employees while promoting wage growth and retention.
Singapore’s broader message is clear: AI should augment workers rather than replace them, and successful AI adoption must balance innovation with workforce resilience and social inclusion.
