New Shared Parental Leave Scheme Begins 1 April 2025

27 March 2025

The new Shared Parental Leave (SPL) scheme will be implemented from April 2025, with an additional two weeks of mandatory Government-Paid Paternity Leave (GPPL). The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in the 2024 National Day Rally, aims to strengthen caregiving support for parents and promote shared parental responsibility. Under the scheme, eligible working parents of Singapore Citizen children born from April 2025 will be entitled to six weeks of SPL, increasing to 10 weeks for children born from April 2026. SPL can be shared between parents, with flexibility to adjust the leave arrangement according to family needs.

The leave should be used within 12 months of the child’s birth and after the Government-Paid Maternity Leave or GPPL is exhausted. Parents must inform employers in advance of their leave plans, with a minimum notice of four weeks for continuous leave within the first 26 weeks of the child’s birth. The SPL sharing arrangement can be updated through LifeSG, but any changes after four weeks require mutual consent from both parents and employers. Employers will verify these arrangements and submit claims for reimbursement through the Government-Paid Leave portal. The policy reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to support Singaporean families.
