What to Expect During a Reference Check as a Job Seeker

21 August 2026

If you’ve made it to the reference check stage, the employer is already interested. A reference check isn’t a hurdle designed to catch you out, it’s a routine step to confirm what’s already in your resume and interview matches reality. Knowing what happens during one can take a lot of the anxiety out of it.

What Actually Gets Asked

Most reference checks stick to a fairly standard set of questions:

  • Dates of employment: confirming when you started and left the role
  • Job title and duties: checking that what you did day to day matches what you described
  • Reason for leaving: a general check that your account lines up with your former employer’s
  • Work performance: a general sense of how you performed, from someone who worked with you directly
  • Rehire eligibility: whether your former employer would take you back, a question that carries a lot of signal on its own

Who Gets Contacted

Reference CheckReference checks are almost always done with your knowledge and consent. Employers or the agency handling the check will usually ask you upfront for the names and contact details of former supervisors or HR contacts, not reach out to people at random. If you’re worried about a specific former employer, it’s reasonable to raise that with the recruiter beforehand rather than let it stay a source of stress.

How to Prepare

  • Give accurate dates and titles. Small inconsistencies between your resume and what a former employer confirms can raise more questions than the actual facts warrant.
  • Choose referees who know your recent work. A direct supervisor from your most recent role is usually more useful than someone from years earlier.
  • Give your referees a heads up. A quick message letting them know a call might be coming means they respond faster and more thoughtfully.

It’s a Formality, Not an Obstacle

By the time a reference check happens, the employer has already decided they like you. This step exists to confirm what they already believe, not to look for a reason to change their mind. Treating it as routine, rather than something to be anxious about, is usually the most accurate way to see it.
